Last week I wrote a somewhat disparaging entry about the Massage Therapy Journal, and how it made a claim (that workplace massage is increasing) and then failed to back it up. After examining the AMTA Consumer Survey Fact Sheets from 2005 to 2010 (click here) and the 2009 and 2005 Massage Industry Fact Sheets, I now realize that general trends in the massage therapy industry are definitely hard to spot; determining whether specific trends are emerging, such as an increase in workplace massage, is even harder yet. But some general trends can be seen.
First, the good news: (more…)

When getting a massage, most people focus on the bigger areas, such as the back, neck, shoulders and arms. Face massage doesn’t seem to be too common, but, in fact, there is a lot of information out there about it. Indeed, the term gets 2,120,000 hits on Google, and there are numerous instructional videos on YouTube.
However, the exact benefits of face massage therapy, how, and to whom, it is performed, and even basic general information about the modality (from legitimate sources) are hard to discover. (more…)

We’ve been writing over the past few weeks about medical massage therapy and the difficulty of defining what it is exactly. While we reached a fairly bland definition last week, what’s more important is that now, more than ever, people are beginning to use massage therapy for medical situations and in medical environments. (more…)

We wrote last week about the difficulty of defining medical massage therapy, as its definition can vary state-by-state or by municipality.
Indeed, the lack of a national or professional definition leaves medical massage therapy’s determination very nebulous. (more…)

We talk about the therapeutic and medicinal benefits of massage therapy so often that it seems important to actually define what medical massage therapy is exactly. The hard part, of course, is that medical massage therapy lacks clear definition across, and within, America’s 50 states. As we’ll explore in a series of blogs, there are many players who determine the current definition of medical massage therapy, and, so far, an exact definition of the term has yet to be reached.

Quick! Why is this day, and every day this week, so special? What incredibly important field, medical treatment, and profession will be commemorated and celebrated all week?
That last question probably gave it away. The answer: massage therapy, of course! Every day, from July 18 to the 24, is special because it is ABMP’s National Massage Week (EveryBody Deserves a Massage Week). If you feel like a lazy or uninformed massage therapist for not knowing this, don’t worry: the event does not have a very large Web presence or general buzz about it. Indeed, searching for information about the week and events planned around it is extremely difficult. (more…)

The American Massage Therapy Association came out with its 2010 Massage Therapy Industry Fact Sheet. And while it was released in February of this year, I’m just now beginning to look it over. There are a lot of interesting statistics and trends outlined in the document, as always, but today I want to focus attention on the economic health of the massage therapy field.
The AMTA seems to think that the industry is growing and that massage therapists are making increasing amounts of money. This, of course, flies in the face of conventional wisdom as the recent economic downturn should mean that consumers are spending less on massage therapy. (more…)

We’ve mentioned earlier how massage therapy has benefits for women who are pregnant, and we’ve even written about hospitals in Tennessee that offer massage therapy to women who are delivering or have delivered babies there, noting that massage therapy can ease tension, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and promote quicker healing. But as the Institute of Integrative Healthcare Studies points out in an article published this May, “[w]omen with high-risk pregnancies are often deprived of bodywork, even though they can benefit the most.” (more…)

Last week we referenced a news article about a massage therapist volunteering at a hospital, helping a 13-year-old through his painful condition. This week another story caught our eye, this time from the Saskatoon StarPhoenix (in central Saskatchewan, Canada).
Apparently, for at least the past 18 years, Axl Rose, frontman for 80’s hard rock group Guns N’ Roses, has had a massage therapist on call as the band tours. (more…)

Good news for massage therapists – the amount of job opportunities in the field of massage therapy may be increasing during the recent economic downturn.
According to an article by the Detroit Free Press, there is a strong demand for massage therapists, at least in Michigan, and a lot of laid-off workers are turning to massage therapy as a second career. (more…)
